The Mexican federal state of Oaxaca has 480 km of Pacific coastline with many beautiful beaches, lagoons and excellent waves for surfing. Puerto Escondido – as the name itself suggests it’s a hidden place situated south of the famous Acapulco on the Pacific coast.
That picturesque Pacific town is a paradise for surfers who come from all over the world to surf on the beach with some of the biggest waves in Latin America – Playa Zicatela. Luckily for surfers, swimmers usually steer clear of Zicatela beach because it’s really hard to handle its giant and sometimes lethal waves. Every year, hundreds of surfers come to Puerto Escondido to catch a famous “Mexican Pipline” wave at Zicatela beach. If you are a begginer or inetrmediate surfer the ideal beaches for you are La Punta and La Barra de Colopotec with medium sized waves. Besides the “Pipeline” on Hawaii’s coastline, “Mexpipe” is one of the most recognized and powerful barrels for surfers in the world.
The best period to surf in Puerto Escondido is during the south swell months, from April through October. In autumn period the waves at Zicatela beach can reach up to 10 meters in height.
Even though the main tourist facilities are near Zicatela beach, if you’re not a surfer you can take a long walk and check other beaches such as Playa Principal or Playa Marinero for example.
Puerto Escondido is not a sophisticated place with expensive hotels or wellness and spa resorts. It’s a small town with a few very cheap hotels and hostels, very friendly people and great parties. There is nothing much to do except enjoy the sun, sea and surf, taste some good food, drink a cocktail and relax on the beach.
Fishing is still an important source of revenue and on Playa Principal you can see the anchored fishing boats. Therefore local seafood restaurants offer variety of fresh fish, squid, octopus and other seafood.
There are several ways to reach Puerto Escondido from Mexico City. It’s a twelve hour drive by bus, but they have luxury Volvo buses, which I would strongly recommend. If you have some extra money, you can of course take a plane.
As I have already mentioned, you don’t need a lot of money to stay in Puerto Escondido. You can find accommodation for $10 per night, it’s not perfect, but for that price is good enough. Also it’s important to mention that Puerto Escondido is a really calm and safe small town, unlike some other vacation spots in Mexico.
